Understanding Gandhian Nonviolence

It was a young Rev. James Lawson who introduced the principles of Gandhian nonviolence to many of the future leaders of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement in the US, including Martin Luther King.  During his three years as a Methodist missionary in India, Lawson was profoundly influenced by the philosophy and techniques of nonviolent resistance as espoused by Mohandas Gandhi. In this short interview, he summarizes the Gandhian approach, which transcends religious boundaries and is often misrepresented as a form of pacifism, with brilliant clarity:
