In this superb short animated film, psychologist Tim Kasser discusses how the all-pervasive culture of consumerism undermines our well-being. Kasser argues that when people buy into the ever-present marketing messages that “the good life” is “the goods life,” they not only use up Earth’s limited resources, but they are less happy and less inclined toward helping others.
The animation both lays out the problems of excessive materialism and points toward solutions that promise a healthier, more equitable, and more sustainable life. Although it is directed towards a US audience, the wider context is applicable to Western society in general, where rabid consumerism and the cult of economic growth holds sway.
